who else out there has always wanted a carnivorous plant? though as you can tell by the illustration they don’t come without risks!
.
this idea may have popped into my head because I just finished rereading Shades of Grey (not 50 shades of grey - dear god!) by Jasper Fforde which begins with the protagonist being digested by one. a very worthwhile read if anyone is looking for a new book!
.
still trying to figure out how to draw sillier kids. I’m getting used to drawing these new faces, whatcha think?

hi it’s me a children’s book illustrator, trying to be more kid friendly!
.
in all seriousness, I don’t draw very many kids and I should do. so I’ve challenged myself to get better at it. always playing, learning, experimenting!
.
also this wide format just doesn’t work on Instagram, swipe through to see the whole thing
.
also as a lovely follower brought up, please don’t actually step on turtles or any animals!

Wading in Waist-High Water
.
A little while ago I got it into my head to attempt to illustrate music. As the pandemic drags on I’ve been quite low on inspiration and honestly the motivation to draw. I feel like I drained all my creative batteries finishing up the last book I worked on (which I can’t WAIT to show more of), and still haven’t had a chance to go out in the world and refill them. I began thinking about the things that have inspired me the most in lockdown and something immediately sprang to mind: the album Shore by @fleetfoxes @robinpecknold . So I set myself the slightly overambitious task of illustrating the whole album song by song. I totally underestimated how challenging painting music that resonates so deeply with me would be. Fleet Foxes in particular have always made music that sounds like how I want my drawings to feel
.
Here’s one of the first attempts at Wading in Waist-High Water. All the drawings are totally stream of consciousness, some more successful than others, but they were challenging and fun and also gave me a chance to practice a little more abstraction. Most importantly they got me painting again.
.
I’ll share more if you guys are into it

seeing if I can draw the spooky evil queen in my childhood favorite book from memory. I suppose how accurately I was able to replicate it from memory is a testament to how many times I’ve stared at this page! the original painting is from “der Mann aus Zucker” illustrated by Julia Gukova.
.
trying to get back in the swing of things by setting a timer every day and just making myself draw. even though this is just a little tribute to a favorite, I’m sharing it here because today I was able to joyfully put pigment on paper and recently that feels like a big win!
